A Valuable Resource
for Nature Photographers

New book shows where and how to photograph
in Death Valley National Park

Wildlife photographer Dan Suzio has been shooting in Death Valley National Park for more than three decades, and for almost that long his friends have been asking his advice whenever they plan to visit the desert wilderness. Now the best of Suzio's advice is available to all in his new book, Death Valley Photographer's Guide: Where and how to get the best shots.

With a friendly tone and a sense of humor, Suzio describes how he photographs the landscapes, flowers, wildlife, and ghost towns of what is perhaps America's most storied national park, addressing both the technical and creative aspects of nature photography. The book is generously illustrated with the author's photographs, each one captioned with camera, lens, exposure, and other information about how it was made. The biggest section of the book provides descriptions of more than sixty specific locations in and around the park, noting the photographic highlights of each one, the time of day to find the best light, and the typical wildflower season - plus maps and directions to get you there.

Most of the locations listed are accessible via passenger car. For the more adventurous, Suzio includes a selection of more remote places that require a four-wheel-drive vehicle, and even a few that call for an all-day hike. First-time visitors will appreciate his tips on how to stay alive in a place that holds records as the hottest, lowest, and driest place in the U.S. He also tells you where to find restaurants and lodging in the park so you can relax and recuperate from your more strenuous adventures.

At the back of the book is a chart that summarizes the locations so a photographer can quickly find the best places for flowers, birds, sand dunes, historic sites, or other subjects of interest. A companion web site, at www.DeathValleyPhotographersGuide.com, provides links to current conditions in the park, including weather reports, wildflower updates, road closures, and other critical information for travelers.

The book has something for every photographer, from the casual visitor with a point-and-shoot to the seasoned pro with a bag full of lenses. As Suzio points out, he can tell you where to look for interesting subjects and when to find the good light, and offer a few suggestions about exposure and composition, but ultimately it's up to you to make the photograph, using your own creative talents and personal vision.

About the author

Dan Suzio's photographs have appeared in hundreds of books, magazines, and natural history museums. He is best known for his portraits of reptiles, amphibians, and birds, which he has photographed throughout the western United States.

Suzio "has an astounding ability to capture natural situations and spontaneous action while also achieving the artistic composition, color, and sharpness of detail I associate with studio work," says Dan Rademacher, Editorial Director of Bay Nature magazine. Publisher, editor, and photo industry consultant Ann Guilfoyle says that Suzio's images "are marked by a deep fascination with his subject" and invite the viewer to "take a close, involved look."
